The government is rolling out several major updates to the Public Distribution System (PDS) starting in 2025. These new rules focus on making ration services more transparent, digital, and beneficial for low-income families.
One of the biggest highlights is the introduction of a ₹1,000 monthly cash benefit for eligible households, along with upgraded digital features for ration card management.
Digital Ration Card System Introduced
From 2025, ration cards will fully transition into a digital format. This means beneficiaries will be able to access their ration card details, entitlement information, and recent transactions online through an upgraded portal and mobile app. The digital system aims to reduce paperwork, avoid duplication of ration cards, and ensure fast verification.
e-KYC Becomes Mandatory for All Cardholders
To keep the records clean and ensure only genuine beneficiaries receive ration, the government has made e-KYC compulsory. Households must complete Aadhaar-based authentication for all members enrolled under the ration card. Those who fail to finish e-KYC within the deadline risk being removed from the beneficiary list.
₹1,000 Monthly Cash Benefit for Eligible Families
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a direct financial benefit. Eligible low-income households will receive ₹1,000 every month through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This amount is intended to provide additional support for essential household needs. The fund will be credited directly into the bank account linked with the family’s ration card.
New Verification Rules to Identify Fake and Duplicate Cards
To strengthen the system, the government will conduct statewide verification drives. Ration cards found inactive or linked to fake documents may be cancelled. Families who have moved or whose income has increased beyond eligibility limits may also be excluded. Beneficiaries are advised to update all personal details including address, income category, and Aadhaar numbers to avoid removal.
Mobile App for Tracking Ration and Benefits
A new smartphone application will allow users to check ration stock availability, download digital ration cards, complete e-KYC, and track DBT payments. This step brings more transparency to the system and ensures beneficiaries stay informed about all updates.
Doorstep Delivery to Begin in Select States
Some states will implement doorstep delivery of ration items. Beneficiaries will receive grains directly at home after OTP verification. This step aims to eliminate long queues, reduce middlemen interference, and ensure timely delivery.
